“A Friend Called Grace” (Phillips, Craig & Dean) — This soulful song with gospel vibes retells the well-known and much-loved story of the woman caught in adultery, then shows how her story is the story of us all. Condemnation is our enemy, but grace is our friend. Grace lifts us from the dust and restores us to a right relationship with God. If you haven’t yet encountered grace, this song will remind you that there’s someone you need to meet.
“Grace Like Rain” (Todd Agnew) — Todd Agnew’s distinctive ragged voice adds richness to this revitalized edition of “Amazing Grace.” This song takes you on a journey, slowly building to a strong climax. It gives sound to the stages of grace, showing how grace first gently trickles in, then steadily pours down, then rushes over you in a flood. Like refreshing rain, grace makes you clean, washing away all of your stains until all you’re left with is reason to praise, rejoice, and celebrate the gift you’ve been given.
“Grace Upon Grace” (Matthew West) — Gentle and soothing, this song also speaks of grace as being like water, only this time it’s portrayed as waves of the ocean. This metaphor shows us that the gift of grace isn’t given only once, but over and over, made new each dawn. We need God’s grace every single day; without it, we would wallow in guilt as we continued to make the same mistakes, with no hope of ever drawing closer to what God desires us to be.
This song also testifies to what grace withholds from us and to what it offers us. The bridge, a verse from the hymn “Nothing But the Blood,” points to the fountain from which grace flows. Grace is a gift Jesus purchased for us at great cost, for which we’re ever grateful.
“I See Grace” (Micah Tyler) — With its vibrant string section background and upbeat vibe, this song is sure to make you feel like dancing! It captures the joy God’s grace brings into our lives. Grace erases the sins of our past, brightens our path in the present, and grants us hope for the future. Not only do we see beauty in grace, but also grace sees righteousness in us because Christ has robed us in His flawlessness. That’s a glorious thought; it’s certainly something worth singing about!
“Grace of God” (Ben Fuller) — You can almost hear the sound of chains breaking in this song reminiscent of an old African-American spiritual in style and theme. Ben Fuller’s rough-hewn voice is perfectly suited to this testimony of a prisoner who’s been set free and is now praising God for his deliverance. The only reason for his freedom—and ours—is the mighty grace of God, strong enough to shatter the heaviest chains.
“How Sweet the Sound” (Citizen Way) — As you might guess from the title, this is another song based on “Amazing Grace.” It’s among my favorite modern renditions of the classic hymn, because it captures so beautifully what grace might sound like. In addition, the song has a distinctly nautical aura, and it’s hard to resist singing along with the chorus.
Grace is strong and mighty, yet sweet and soothing. It stills our hearts and restores our souls, surrounding us with peace and encompassing us in fathomless love.
